Featured Story

“The tree feeds us. Now we are learning to protect it back.”

Akello has harvested shea nuts beneath the same Vitellaria nilotica trees her grandmother once walked. For years, falling prices, encroachment, and charcoal cutting threatened both her income and the trees themselves.

Through our cooperative programme she joined a women-led savings group, completed post-harvest quality training, and helped GPS-map more than 200 mature shea trees on her sub-county's communal land. Her household income has risen, and her cooperative is preparing its first EUDR-documented batch for export.

“We used to think the trees would always be here,” she says. “Now we count them, we name the old ones, and we plant new ones.”
